Meet the best role model I’ve come across this year…
This is Jenny Barwick with daughter Kaitlin.
The mother and daughter combo was just one of many hanging out at the Southport Broadwater Parkland yesterday for the Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial race.
Doubling as the Grand Final of the 2009/2010 Gatorade Queensland Tri Series, close to two-and-a-half thousand competitors swam, cycled and ran on what turned out to be a beautiful beach morning. There has been a 25 percent increase in participation since last year and, even after donning a fluoro green cap and sucking up about a litre of seawater, it’s easy to see why. |
For my first ‘proper’ triathlon (the swim in my first race at Raby Bay was cancelled because of a tsunami warning) I was as nervous as hell. I woke up before my alarm went off at 5am, tugged up the purple lycra suit, gathered a mini-support crew of amazing friends, and huddled off towards the beach. My buddies chowed down on brekkie while I had a number scribbled in black marker down my right arm, a letter scrawled on my left calf and was herded through a gate to rack my bike and lay out my helmet, shoes, cap and any other piece of equipment I’d need during the 750m swim/20km cycle/5km run. With time to spare I soaked in the nervous energy bouncing off most people within a 10km radius of the Broadwater, chatted with a few of my BTS beginner buddies, and jumped in the water to get warm. My category of 25-29 females was one of the last to start, I was shaking with nerves and had triple-checked my goggles by the time we broke the water. I’m not going to take you through leg by leg but highlights during the race included hearing and seeing friends cheering along the course, stepping out of the water into the transition area, pulling on the runners and setting off on foot along the road, and turning the final corner towards the finish line.
I’ve never been happier (although I look pretty shattered here)…

I figure most people think a triathlon’s for the superfit human being but believe me, there were all types out there yesterday including young whippersnappers like little Kaitlin (top pic). If you’ve got kids who are interested or you’re keen to get involved, here’s what Kaitlin’s mum Jenny had to say:
“In this day and age with drugs and alcohol and mental illness it’s great to get the kids involved because it boosts their self esteem and confidence. They’re going to make the wrong choice sometimes but at least it’s going to be their choice and they’re not going to be led by somebody else. I think having the confidence to get out and do events like this is what gives them the confidence to hopefully make the right decision. I’m a personal trainer so I get people who’ve never done something like this in their life and when I ask them, ‘do you want to have a go?’ they look at me like I’m nuts. Then they come along and see people three times their size doing the whole race and they realise it’s just not for the above average fitness level and anyone, including kids, can have a go. There’s a lady out here on the course who I think is close to 80 years old, she’s a great great grandmother!”
Triathlon bosses have made the smart move of tailoring races for everyone, so there’s not only the Olympic distance races but the Gatorade Queensland Tri Series (750m/20km/5km), the NAB Enticer Tri Series (300m/10km/2.5km) and The Courier-Mail Kool Kids Tri (100m/2km/400m).

See you at the Noosa Tri in October!!!
